Silly Facemask!

Silly_Facemask

Don’t I look silly? This picture was taken of me sleeping in the plane, with an eye mask on AND with a face mask on. I look like a character from my little boy’s favorite Japanese children’s show called Ultraman Gaya!

But, if I want to remain healthy AND get some decent sleep while I travel, I may have to continue with this fashionable look. What about you guys? Would you dare attempt this? Would love to hear your comments on this.

Fennel and Dried Plum Salad that help you live longer

Fennel and Dried Plum Salad
Combine sliced fennel, sautéed or raw, and dried plums on a plate. Drizzle with a ginger vinaigrette. (Olive oil, vinegar and minced ginger, if you are making yourself.)

What is this salad doing for you?
This salad soothes digestion and supports weight loss. Fennel helps digestion in two ways: It stimulates the production of gastric juices and also calms the nervous system, regulating the action of the muscles that line the intestine. Packed with vitamin C and essential minerals like potassium and magnesium, dried plums contain a perfectly balanced proportion of soluble and insoluble fibers, ensuring bowel regularity and preventing insulin resistance—making them a great ingredient for weight management.

Small plate of soy sauce packed with good stuff

chilligarlic

I was at a Chinese restaurant with my family. There, we each had a small saucer of some cut raw chillis and raw chopped garlic dipped in soy sauce. And I was thinking, this actually is an excellent health food to be taken by all.

Red chillis are packed with Vitamin C and Vitamin A. Meanwhile, modern science has shown that garlic is a powerful natural antibiotic, albeit broad-spectrum rather than targeted. Garlic is also a powerful antioxidant. No wonder it’s long been considered a herbal “wonder drug”. Also, the National University of Singapore found that soy sauce contains antioxidant properties that are 150 times that of vitamin C and approximately 10 times of the properties found in red wine. Trust the Singaporeans to do a research on this. But, before you start to guzzle up tons of soy sauce, remember, soy sauce is very, very salty, so too much is not good for your health. But anyways, too much of a good thing is always not good.

Try this if you have a cold, flu or just generally feel unwell.

Now if only I could get my two little kids to eat some of the condiments instead of playing with it, spilling the sauce all over the clean, pink tablecloth! A recipe for disaster!

Cough remedies – My gingery drink

Looking for effective cough remedies?

FYI. Many a time, you may get this chronic cough because mucus is flowing into the back of your throat. When it does that, you will automatically start to cough. So, how to get rid of this cough? Try my simple but highly effective gingery home remedy.

Ginger2.jpg

First, you pound some ginger into pulp. The amount you need is about the size of your thumb. Ginger is a well documented mucus expectorant, and raw ginger works best in this case.

Ginger3.jpg

Then, you put the ginger into a glass and add equal amounts of honey. Drizzle in about 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce water, just enough to stir. Honey not only improves the taste of the ginger juice, the thick honey coats the throat, alleviating discomfort. Even better, the antibacterial and antiseptic properties of honey aid in healing sore throats and laryngitis.

Sip slowwly, on an EMPTY stomach and feel the ginger tingle in your throat, doing it’s magic, getting rid of the mucus and clearing your sinus.

You HAVE to try this amazing gingery drink. It not only stops the cough, it also stops your runny nose and easing your sore throat. You can buy store bought ginger drops or off the shelf cough syrups, but you can’t guarantee the preservatives and coloring in those stuff will affect you or interfere with your other medicine.

Sen Ze can’t see

We try not to go out nowadays because of the Swine Flu (H1N1 virus) pandemic. However, last Sunday, Shaun had to give an Internet talk at THE biggest bookfest in Southeast Asia (Shaun, by the way, is known as Sen Ze to the internet world) at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center next to the KLCC shopping center. KLCC is an iconic place because this is where the world famous Petronas Twin Tower is at.

The shopping center with lots of fabulous shops,
the world class aquarium called the Aquaria
and the Convention Center are right below the towering twin towers!

While we were there at the Convention Center, I noticed that quite a number of people wearing masks either to protect themselves or to protect people from their flu.

but can’t see from this angle

Shaun has only one complain about wearing masks. His hot breathe tends to fog up his glasses!

Today, I saw a random newspaper picture of a plump Chinese guy nicely sleeping in his plane seat with his face mask covering his eyes like an eye mask. That was funny. Which, you know, means you could also use a face mask as a hair band, pretty much the way people place sun glasses at the top of their head to keep their hair out of their face. Yup. There’s many other ways to use face masks.

Ok, so it’s uncomfortable wearing masks. I would be the first to admit it. It is. I feel like Darth Vader when I wear it. It’s hard to breathe, and I’m just this much closer sounding like Darth Vader as well. And like Shaun, having your glasses fogged up is no fun. Can’t see. But hey, it’s for the greater good! I mean, if I coughed a storm up, and didn’t wear a face mask, you’d be pissed, won’t you?
